Why bother with a 'dead' language?

Writer's picture: ViolaViola

The most common question a classics student is ever asked is 'why do you study latin? No one even speaks it!' And we get it, why study an inactive language? Firstly, latin is so much more than a language, it's drama, art, music, literature, philosophy and obviously history. We're sure you have heard this lecture before- from your 100 year old prehistoric, on-foot-in-the-grave latin teacher, but it's slightly more rare to hear two teenage girls confessing their undying love for latin. Hopefully, throughout this blog if we manage to get you to share even a thread of our passion, we'll have done our job.

Our plan to expose 'generation z' to the classical world will help no matter what you are studying, while also making you realise why classics is important, even about 2000 years later. With fortnightly posts on Sundays, we will be doing latin language GCSE level courses, book reviews, trip reviews, bite-sized insights into the classical world and language morphology with romantic European languages (and the occasional bit of Ancient Greek).
